Kate’s Comics to Buy 1/8

It’s the first Wednesday comic release of the New Year! In honor of starting fresh, to start my pull list off this week I have Black Widow #1.

Writer: Nathan Edmondson Artist: Phil Noto

Writer: Nathan Edmondson
Artist: Phil Noto

I am also excited to see ladies with solo titles, and Nathan Edmondson and Phil Noto make this a must have for me. I really enjoyed Edmondson’s last offering of The Dream Merchant and if you’ve read my review of Ghost, then you are aware of my love for the way Noto draws women. Do yourself a favor and try something new and grab this title!

The second title I’d suggest you try is Adventure Time Flip Side #1.

Writer: Paul Tobin, Colleen Coover

Cover Art: Wook Jin Clark, Ru Xu

All the Adventure Time comics I have read have been great quality, and fun romps in Ooo. With the creative team behind Bandette, picking this up is a no-brainer.

Next up on my pull list is Sex Criminals #4.

Writer: Matt Fraction Artist: Chip Zdarsky

Writer: Matt Fraction
Artist: Chip Zdarsky

Everything good you’ve heard about this series is true, and this issue promises to finally reveal the villains!

This week my pull list has a bit of a theme: love (sex), violence and adventure, both prominent in Five Ghosts #8.

Writer: Frank J. Barbiere Artist: Chris Mooneyham

Writer: Frank J. Barbiere
Artist: Chris Mooneyham

Chris Mooneyham’s art throughout this series has been absolutely stellar. While the storyline has become a bit meandering since it became on ongoing, this comic is fully of classic adventure and for this issue – PIRATES!

Fatale #19 promises to deliver a smashing conclusion to the fourth story arc of the series.

Writer: Ed Brubaker
Artist: Sean Phillips, Bettie Breitweiser
Cover Artist: Sean Phillips

I have been hoarding the current issues of this story line, and I can’t wait to gorge on them tomorrow as inevitably, more people around Josephine die terrible deaths.

Slightly lighter, though still violent, Fantomex #4.

Writer: Andrew Hope Artist: Shawn Crystal Cover Artist: Francesco Fancavilla

Writer: Andrew Hope
Artist: Shawn Crystal
Cover Artist: Francesco Fancavilla

This comic has been a guilty pleasure for me. Fantomex is a rascal and ruffian complete in Han Solo style. I love the over the top colors and art in addition to the 70’s James Bond feel.

Bringing violence to a more epic scale, Suicide Risk #9 threatens the fate of the world.

Writer: Mike Carey
Artist: Elena Casagrande
Cover Artist: Stephanie Hans

Superpowers, aliens, reincarnation, this comic has it all. The current story arc continues to ramp up in this issue, as Leo has to keep trying to save lives while working with a supervillains and a girl who can tell the future.

The last issue on my pull list is one I am looking forward to savoring, Young Avengers #15.

YoungAvengers_15

Writer: Kieron Gillen
Art: Jamie McKelvie, Becky Cloonan, Ming Doyle, Joe Quinones, Mike Norton
Cover Art: Jamie McKelvie

Young Avengers has been my favorite supehero team book since I started reading it. After finally winning against a terrible parasitic psycho being, we get to watch the team party and more drama unfold. A nice relaxing issue? Never!

That’s it for my pull list this week. If you think I’m missing something awesome, let me know in the comments (where we can DEBATE TO THE DEATH)
