I have seen Aphrodite IX advertised in the back pages of various Image comics for the past month. Whether it was repeatedly seeing images of this green eyed beauty, or Fiona Staple’s tweet about enjoying the series, Aphrodite IX #1 was definitely something I had to grab on FCBD.
I must admit that I am not familiar with the previous Aphrodite IX series, so this FCBD issue was my first introduction the the post-apocalyptic world that Aphrodite awakens in. In this world there are two factions warring for the miniscule amount liveable land: humans that enhance themselves via cybernetics and humans that have evolved with genetic enhancements.
Created as an assassin before the world collapsed, Aphrodite IX has both types of enhancements, and she awakens in the middle of the conflict not knowing who or where she is. As Aphrodite is taken in by the genetically enhanced humans, her handler is awakened after centuries and is questioned by the cybernetically enhanced. Drama!
Matt Hawkins, current author of Think Tank does a good job of introducing the world and Aphrodite IX. Accompanying the story is the art of Stjepan Sejic, an artist familiar to any who read Top Cow publications. His art is hit or miss for me, and in Aphrodite IX the realism of the art fades and sharpens inconsistently, becoming distracting at times. All minor flaws considered, this issue definitely has me hooked enough to at least buy the second issue, and I look forward to seeing what happens with the title.
