Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Nails it: “Blam – Your Dead”

Issue 2 starts off with the Guardians (minus Groot + Iron Man) taking on a Badoon invasion! With no superheros in London to help them (apparently Captain Britain is useless) the guardians must face the Badoon on their own – hopefully living up to their tough legacy. With comic book magic, there happens to be the same number of Badoon ships as Guardians members, so it is quickly decided that each team member will fight an individual Badoon ship.

This plan allows the Bendis & Co. an opportunity to showcase each individual member of the team as they work together to ward off an invasion. Clearly the best of these moments is watching Rocket Raccoon gleefully kill Badoon warriors, shouting “Blam, you’re dead” after each shot.

Meanwhile, we see the secret meeting that decided the fate of the Earth. While other galaxy leaders want the Earth destroyed before humans become a plague to the galaxy, Mother Freya holds firm and in no uncertain terms shuts down this maneuver.  This brief respite of calm (and interesting back story) adds the perfect amount of gravitas to the issue, which would otherwise be nothing but action.

At the end of the issue the Guardians begin to face the consequences of the decision to sequester earth. The ending is a great cliff-hanger that leaves the future of the Guardians hanging in the balance!

Overall Guardians of the Galaxy continues to the perfect superhero team book. Bendis is able to make each character stand out in their own way (Drax perhaps excluded), and there is the perfect amount of levity and narrative to ground the comic. Issue 2 does not disappoint, and I cannot wait until Issue 3!
