Constantine Battles WTF Month: Constantine #2

Jeff Lemire and Ray Fawkes are back with Constantine in his new, 52, home. I’ve been very curious what was in store for Constantine when DC announced April would be “WTF Month” and previewed the cover. It didn’t look like a pleasant second issue for Constantine to say the least. Suffice to say, SPOILERS AHEAD!

Constantine dead in the second issue of a new series; how shocking would that event be? Of course that was never going to be the outcome. The cover folds out to reveal the Spectre passing judgment upon Constantine which gave me such high hopes for this issue. However, the Spectre moment is truly a “WTF” moment in the way that a “Do Not Karate Fight the Panda Bear” sign at the zoo would make you react. It feels out of place in this issue as if it was added as an afterthought.

Outside of the “WTF” moment, the second issue was a good follow up to the first. Constantine comes into contact with Mister E and escapes in grand fashion but loses the compass needle in the process. Thankfully he is able to secure the dial before Mister E and Sargon the Sorceress can track it down. Though it appears we may be only seeing the tip of the iceberg of crazy/evil that is Sargon the Sorceress.

I await the third installment of this new series but with waning excitement. There is a great story here that hopefully won’t be overshadowed by a gimmick.
